The tradition begins with Wounaan men collecting palm fibers from remote, hard-to-reach areas. Wounaan women then weave these fibers, passing down their ancestral knowledge from generation to generation.

The process starts with the careful extraction and dyeing of the fibers using natural pigments derived from local plants, roots, and bark, creating a palette of earthy and vibrant tones. With meticulous precision, the women crimp and craft the fibers by hand, transforming simple materials into powerful expressions of identity and storytelling. Depending on the complexity of the design, this intricate work can take weeks or even months to complete.
